Studio ballenbak is, in Dutch, a playful and easy to remember name, but strategic and in terms of the image of the organization, the name is less interesting for an organization that specializes in environmental psychology (not to mention my English writing skills ;-) ). Therefore there is a new (Dutch) website: omgevingspsycholoog.nl (Dutch translation of environmental psychologist).

The content of omgevingspsycholoog.nl will be similar to studioballenbak.nl. In addition, the post will also be translated in Dutch. Then I switched from Dutch to English to address a wider public. However, I noticed, most of my followers are Dutch. Therefore we're going to try to offer the content in both Dutch and English.

Also, the tweets will be in Dutch (@omgevingspsy) and English (@environmentpsy).

And studio ballenbak? That is going in the fridge for a while. There will be undoubtedly a moment for which studio ballenbak is appropriate.

Ps. Yes it hurts to kill one of your greatest darlings.

Pps. For those wondering what studio ballenbak means in Dutch; literally it means ‘studio ball pit’. But that name doesn’t pronounce as easily as studio ballenbak.

colored drinking glasses to help the elderly

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dI7Yel7-edc/TiRm1acPVnI/AAAAAAAAA_I/ew_N3fedhJY/s320/grandma%2Bcolored%2Bglasses%2Benvironmental%2Bpsychology.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630738501936830066" />Last time I visited my grandma, she surprised me with some easy to use environmental psychology; colored drinking glasses. When I saw those drinking glasses, my first thought was why would someone of her age buy such 'hip' glasses. So asked her about it. The reason she came up with was way more smarter than my first 'she probably didn't notice at the shop'-reaction.

My grandma, as many elderly people, experiences difficulties in seeing. Therefore, she has a hard time in noticing colorless transparent objects such as 'normal' drinking glasses. As a consequence, she accidentally pushed down several of those filled glasses, which caused, of course, a lot of a mess. My aunt noticed the problem and came up with a very easy and cheap solution; colored drinking glasses! According to my grandma, she hasn't problems in perceiving her drinking glasses.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w_pNQFQ59zE/TiRnBCNvL5I/AAAAAAAAA_Q/VmA2Vqz5Mj8/s320/colored%2Bglasses%2Benvironmental%2Bpsychology.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630738701591981970" />While she was telling me this story, I started to realize how easily we (yeah I know, me too) take 'design' of products and environments for granted. We use colorless transparent glasses all the time, however, not everybody in our society can perceive them as well. This is certainly the case in elderly houses.

Therefore, the urge remains to design products with every user in mind.

Fun at the trainstation

"It’s officially called ‘transfer accelerator’ by Dutch railway maintenance company ProRail, but everyone else would say it’s a slide. Moreover, the chairs also use fewer materials (only seven basic parts and 10 screws) than 'convenient' office chairs do.

Via fastcodesign

"Prettig in Tetem 1, dankzij de psycholoog"

[Due to the Dutch content of the news paper article below, this post will be in Dutch]

Bron: Twentsche Courant Tubantia (6 mei 2011)

Tekst via ikenschede.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OjB8A0y2LWI/TdZsutl3-5I/AAAAAAAAA8k/J4iXceYcX-g/s400/Tetem%2B%2526%2Bomgevingspsycholoog%2B%2BJoren%2Bvan%2BDijk.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608789935704767378" />
Tetem 1 begin maart

battling the worst enemy of getting things done

Where do you go when you need to get things done? This is the question Jason Fried asks people. Most people answer this question in terms of a place or location, a moving object or a specific time. However, he argues, no one ever mentions 'the office'. That's a pity because lots of resources are spent on creating offices and get people to those offices.

From an environmental perspective, it is reasonable that people tend to avoid spaces like offices when they need to get things done. As for instance Stokols et al. (2002) argue; one of the worst enemies of creativity is distraction (of course, getting things done isn't the same as creativity, but those two concepts are heavily related). Jason Fried offers a similar argument.

To battle this distraction I argue that organizations should add some white space to their offices by removing stuff from the physical environment. That's because every object in the room can be a source of distraction (moreover, visual clutter uses up brain resources which cannot be used to get things done). Therefore, it is important to take notice of what objects are strictly necessary and which not.

environmental psychology in 5 minutes

Books are normally ordered according to a system like the alphabet , which is only known by the person who ordered the bookcase. As a consequence, books of different colors and sizes are mixed up. This causes a cluttered sight, which isn’t easy for the mind to perceive. According to my master thesis (Van Dijk, Tanja-Dijkstra & Van Rompay, in prep.), easy to perceive environments do facilitate positive affect (which on its turn facilitates creativity e.g. Isen, 2001). Therefore I would opt for bookcase in which the books are sorted on their color and height. This is easier to perceive and therefore promotes relaxation and a positive feeling. (Afraid to ‘lose’ your books? Don’t worry; at an unconscious level you have registered the colors and size of each book. Therefore you will easily find your books again)." The only difference between those beers is the price and the size of the glass. There is no difference in the volume of the beer. Probably they do so to enhance sales, however, I wonder whether this really increase sales:

That is, people use visual cues to determine how much they have been eating and drinking (see the Dutch post: 'zijn jouw ogen ook in het donker groter dan je mond' or 'Dining in the dark' by Scheibehenne et al. 2010). So, if the visual cue tells you that you have a 'large' beer, would you get the feeling of being satisfied earlier than in the case you were drinking 'small' beers? As a consequence of being satisfied earlier, would 'large' beer consumers consume less beer in total than 'small' beer consumers? If this reasoning is true, than the only effect of this marketing implication is that people feel betrayed, instead of that it increases sales.

Thanks to Miu Marketing and Nudge.

Rietveld, to experience or not to experience

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 125px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TSsmfPWDx3I/AAAAAAAAA6M/0sUMdJNhujw/s200/Gerrit%2BRietveld.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560580483055863666" />Last weekend, I and my girlfriend went to Utrecht to visit the Rietveld exhibition. For those who are not familiar with Rietveld; Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch (interior) architect who became famous for his new way of designing furniture, buildings and environments. As such, he was one of the principal members of 'De Stijl', a Dutch artistic movement.

Because I do not have any 'real' experience with the work of Rietveld, I was quite excited about going there. However, it turned out to be a bit of a anticlimax. The exhibition was just a classic exhibition as you might expect for any other artist in a museum. Of course, by visiting a museum, we could have known that we were expected to just perceive Rietveld's work. But that's not the point.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TSsnBVfQ3wI/AAAAAAAAA6U/_aqEQhRMuuA/s200/Tentoonstelling%2BArchitect%2BRietveld.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560581068820635394" />Rietveld was an (interior) architect. He designed stuff that was meant to be used by people (you know: users). And despite all Rietveld's quotes about that his work was meant for the ordinary people (i.e. that his work was being used) hanging around in the museum, the exhibition did not offer one possibility to actually experience his work (except the perceiving part as in you perceive art). Of course, his work is probably quite expensive, but they could have build replicas. A missed opportunity.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the museum for their historical correctness or how his CV is rebuilt. It's just that by exhibiting (interior) architecture as a kind of art, they ignore the real purpose of (interior) architecture: that it is used by people.

If you find this topic />Signs of disorder like litter, graffiti, or a broken window, trigger more disorderly and petty criminal behavior. At least, this is what the broken window theory (Wilson & Kelling, 1982) states. The reason of why this happens can be found in social proof; if other people do it, than it must be good. In other words, if people see a minor disorder, like litter on the ground, people will interpret this as a sign that other people engage in disorderly behavior. Although there are some universal norms that tells us not to engage in disorderly behavior (like littering), this social proof tells us that it is somehow more justified to do so. Moreover, these signs of disorder trigger also other petty criminal behavior, which on its turn is one way of how criminals are ‘born’. So, if you battle with the disorderly and petty criminal behavior, theory states, than major criminality will drop. This has been applied in several urban projects, as I used the broken window theory in my toilet vandalism intervention (Dutch).

pretty cool research
While reading this article of Noah Goldstein, I realized I never explicitly mentioned the empirical evidence found by Keizer, Lindenberg & Steg (some Dutch researchers) for the broken window theory. And that’s a pity, because it’s actually pretty cool environmental psychological research.

littering by grafitti
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 142px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TQITGisYnvI/AAAAAAAAA5Q/E09c2Oy737M/s200/broken%2Bwindow%2Btheory%2Bgraffiti.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549018693986983666" />So what’s their research about? In one of their experiments, at an alley near a shopping center where people parked their bicycle, they placed a prohibition sign with the text “Graffiti” and manipulated the signs of (dis)order by means of a clean wall or a wall covered with graffiti. Subsequently, they attached some flyers on the handlebars of bicycles. Then, they waited. The results don’t lie; 33% of the people in the ‘clean wall’ condition throw away their flyer and thereby littered the environment, as opposed to 69% of the people in the ‘graffiti wall’ condition.

sneaking behavior
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 122px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TQIQ_jzE-bI/AAAAAAAAA5A/4LX-AyCJ6Ys/s200/broken%2Bwindow%2Btheory%2Bfence.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549016375001151922" />They found similar results for ignoring an explicit request. They blocked the road to a car park by a temporary fence. People had to walk around for about 200 meters to the next entrance (which was also explicitly stated), or they could slip through a 50 centimeters gap (which was, of course, prohibited by a sign). To manipulated (dis)order, they hang up a sign which prohibited people from locking their bikes to the fence. Subsequently, they placed four bikes 1 meter away from the fence in the order condition, or they locked the four bikes to the fence in the disorder condition. Again, the results didn’t lie; 27% of the people in the order condition stepped through the gap as opposed to 82 of the people in the disorder condition.

theft
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 142px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TQIRKA_eAKI/AAAAAAAAA5I/WR4u9MWaqyE/s200/broken%2Bwindow%2Btheory%2Btheft.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549016554636443810" />All right, you might think, these kinds of behaviors are petty crimes, but they look a bit like behavior of naughty children. Well, they’ve also investigated some more serious crime; theft. They hang out an envelope out of a mailbox, with visibly containing a € 5,- note. Subsequently they manipulated the signs of (dis)order by means of a clean environment, graffiti on the mailbox or litter around the mailbox. They found again a significant difference in petty crime behavior between the order and disorder conditions. 13% stole the envelope in the clean condition, compared to 27 % in the graffiti condition and 25% in the litter condition.

women vs. men
Oh, and for those people who think that women do behave more than men, they controlled their results for gender: both sexes engage in disorderly behavior equally.

broken window & the creative environment
Keizer, Lindenberg & Steg (2008) provided a quite strong argument that supports the broken window theory. So, if you want to battle disorderly behavior, it is wise to start battling minor other disorder behavior. Therefore the NS should battle toilet vandalism by making it easier to not litter the toilets. This is also why clean desk policies are of major importance if you want to keep the overall office clean. Moreover, according to my master thesis, easy to perceive environments (with little visual stimuli like litter) cause a positive feeling. This positive feeling, on its turn, evokes creativity (e.g. Isen, 2001). Also, distractions (like litter) are negatively related with creativity (c.f. Stokols et al. 2002). So therefore, the broken window theory can also add something to your creative environment.

Want to read more about it? If you would ask this question to a random person, he will probably come up with the idea of the fun environment, know from Google, Apple or Pixar. These environments characterize themselves by colorful materials, luxurious facilities such as gyms or lounge areas and gimmicks such as jukeboxes and pool tables. Sounds attractive, doesn’t it? However, does such an environment make you more creative?

creative environment?
Some people claim that these environments give them inspiration and thereby make them more creative. I can imagine that fun environments actually prime creative behavior, like you ‘know’ that you have to be silent in a library (c.f. Aarts & Dijksterhuis, 2003). However, until yet I didn’t find any scientific research supporting the claim of the creative potential of the fun environment (and I did quite a lot of research on this topic).

attractive environment
So what’s the real face of fun environments? I think that, in essence, fun environments attract creativity. Or actually, it attracts people who we regard as being a creative person (whatever that means). This idea is similar to Florida’s idea of the ‘creative city’ (Florida, 2002). Cities should become more attractive to 'creative persons' so that these are willing to live in such city. So by bringing people together, fun environments can stimulate creativity. Sounds reasonable.

the image of creativity
Because companies in the ‘creative industry’ adopted the fun environment (and thereby attracted ‘creative people’), the fun environment became a sort of an image (Van Meel & Vos, 2001). If your office is a fun environment, than you must be a 'creative company'. And, by some definitions of creativity, this is true. So the fun environment became not only an attraction tool, but also a marketing instrument (as you see in, for instance, the Microsoft building in the Netherlands, unfortunately now pics).

a closed institution?
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TP4u93GsHkI/AAAAAAAAA4o/wgWpTSup61E/s320/fun%2Benvironment%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547923431265934914" />If you look more closely at how a fun environment ‘works’, you can see it is a particular persuasive HRM tool. Some companies actively try to make work as an extended hobby. Nothing wrong with people who like their job, I would say. However, this may seem less innocent than I state it here. Because of all the extra services like fitness centrums and restaurants, the fun environment may be seen as a deliberate attempt by the organization to blur the line between work and non-work (Fleming & Spicer, 2004). By such, one could say that the goal of organizations is to mimic a ‘closed institution’, in which there is no other or external social reality (Baldry & Hallier, 2010). To state it else; with fun environments, organizations implicitly determine when, where and how peoples engage in non-work activities and thereby tries to alter the identity of its employees. I’m not quite sure whether this is a good or a bad development (and whether it is that extreme), but it is an interesting thought for which we should be cautious.

conclusion
As in each random environment, some elements in a fun environment can foster creativity (it acts like a social binder to certain people and thereby stimulates social interaction, which is beneficial to creativity (Shalley & Gilson, 2004)) and others inhibit it (lot's of visual stimuli acts as a distraction (see a physical creative environment)). So a fun environment isn’t necessary a creative environment. A fun environment is an attractive environment to certain people, people who are regarded to be creative in a certain field. (And don’t get me wrong, I would be attracted by such an environment too.)

To conclude, a fun environment fosters fun (and thereby maybe creativity) for only a select group; the ‘creative people’. To be effective in an organization for which the majority of employees is not a 'creative person' (and those people need to be creative too!), a fun environment has, for instance, to match the organizational culture. Not everybody is attracted by fun environments. I think the answer to this lies in that thin line which defines how much we ought to listen to and follow clients/end users. At the extreme end of the scale, where we just do what the client wants, we then become merely draughtsmen of their ideas. And at the other end, where we do what we want, whether for the clients benefit or not, no matter the cost, we become deluded dictators. So there lies a line inbetween these two where we ought to find balance. Just to throw in more fuel to the fire, I dont believe the client/customer is always right. Sometimes they are, but other times, they dont see the whole picture. We are here to show them the way by which things could be better."
Originally Posted by sudark

Simon elaborates on those points and states that the architect has two roles; one as interpreter and one as manager. Interpret what the customer means and manage the whole process in order to keep the overview of the design. I fully agree with him.

from style to user centered design

From a environmental psychological point of view, I use a slightly different scale in which my role as environmental psychologist is both the interpreter & manager (see also the Dutch blog post 'Gebruiker als uitgangspunt!?'). At the one extreme of my scale is (interior)architecture as some kind of art. The architect designs an environment according to a certain style (some would say; this is the more traditional architectural view). On the other extreme, we've got (interior)architecture as user centered design.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 124px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOfAJM4r4WI/AAAAAAAAA4U/53VdLbP1wpw/s320/studio%2Bballenbak%2Bfocus%2Buser%2Bcentered%2Bdesign.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541609130813022562" />

environmental psychologist as interpreter & manager

It is my duty as an environmental psychologist (as it should be for all designers) to interpret the wishes of my customers. Do they want a certain style or are they trying to nudge the behavior of people by user centered design? If the focus of the customer is more at the first point, then I'm probably not the guy they are looking for. If, on the other they want to nudge the behavior of people (as in the creative environment), then I'm happy to help them. Of course, often it isn't that clearcut; customers want both some style and some behavior influencing. This is where the role of manager comes into play, keeping the overview of the whole design. How does the design of a certain style influences the behavior of the users of an environment? As Simon points out: this means that I'll never follow a customer blindly, the customer and end-user are often not the same person.

How much do you follow your customer?

See the complete blogpost at experiencingarchitecture.

a physical creative environment

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaWb9vCmVI/AAAAAAAAA28/HOy42bizhdk/s400/creative%2Benvironment%2Bheader.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541281798698473810" />
The creative environment is a story of evidence based design. However, how does it actually look? In the presentation ‘the creative environment in 5 minutes’, several photographs of details examined in psychological studies are used, however, this doesn’t answer the question of how a creative environment really looks like. Recently I had the opportunity to create a physical creative environment. I was asked to redesign the office of a friend, Gijs, into a creative environment. The budget was € 50,-. A challenge.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaVtUUep1I/AAAAAAAAA2s/bK6FPoh7ytM/s320/before%2Bcreative%2Benvironment%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541280997307230034" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaVuTg8fKI/AAAAAAAAA20/tKdf7k2PhyU/s320/before%2Bcreative%2Benvironment%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541281014270950562" />

When you take a brief look at the ‘before’ pictures below, it isn’t hard to imagine that this environment doesn’t facilitates creativity. So, on the other hand, the challenge wasn’t that hard again ;-)

designing an office

An important assumption in designing a creative environment is ‘less is more’. So I started to remove as much as possible and leave only the necessary stuff inside. In such way, you create ‘white space’; the space you leave open when you don’t fill it other stuff. Space to move around (Blanchette et al. 2005). Space wherein no stuff is placed to distract you (c.f. Stokols et al., 2002). Space to activate the concept of spaciousness (Jia et al. 2009). These are scientifically proven ways to promote creativity.

user as point of vantage

Another important assumption to the creative environment is that the user of the environment is central to the design. In the case of this one man office, there is literally one user central to the design. Therefore, his working space is the point of vantage. When placing the desktop and the desk chair, it is the art to find an optimum. An optimal situation in which the user has enough space to move around at the side of the desk at which the user works (to nudge activity) and in which the user has enough visual space in the direction the user will be looking (to promote spaciousness).

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaXt0lEHFI/AAAAAAAAA3U/srsTPS60Fqg/s200/creative%2Benvironment%2Bnature.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541283204989983826" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaXtm7pOeI/AAAAAAAAA3M/2v1HsP6BmX0/s200/creative%2Benvironment%2Bdoor.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541283201326594530" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaXtWoSw4I/AAAAAAAAA3E/faB71I5CfBQ/s200/creative%2Benvironment%2Boverview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541283196950463362" />

The place of the desktop and desk chair which met those requirements was rather easy: in the middle of the room. With the face towards the door, so to secure the privacy of the user (try to sit with your back towards a door), which facilitates creative behavior. Also, this allows for a view on the outside nature, which also promotes creativity (e.g. Klein Hesselink et al. (2005) & Shibata & Suzuki (2004)).

comfort vs. lounge

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 173px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOacAYOKIcI/AAAAAAAAA4M/sjrUaLirbPY/s200/creative%2Benvironment%2Bease%2Bof%2Busing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541287921841742274" />One of the purposes of an office is to work easily. Therefore, you don’t want to frustrate users in their accessibility to devices (like books, administration tools etc.). So, to a certain extent, it is important to design a certain amount of ease within the environment. If you fail to design an environment that’s easy to use, users will, understandably, try to come up with a solution of their own. Such solutions often promote chaos, which fosters distraction (and are therefore not beneficial for creativity). But, then again, you don’t want these helpfull devices to block the visual space we have created before. This would again distract and take away the spaciousness. Therefore, I placed most of the devices behind the user.

At the left side of the workplace a white board is placed. On the one hand, it is possible to view the content of the whiteboard from the working place, but on the other hand, it is uncomfortable to use the board out of your chair. Hopefully, this will nudge the user to stand up when he needs to write something down and get some creative activity.

A little comfort is preferable. But, be careful to turn the office into a lounge area, this would harm productivity.

sterile risk

When creating ‘white space’ by removing elements from the environment, the problem arises that the environment starts to look sterile. This causes users to become ‘afraid’ of using the room. That would be a pity for a room in which they are supposed to work. To cope with this problem, you can place plants (which promote creativity and productivity (e.g. Klein Hesselink et al. (2005) & Shibata & Suzuki (2004)) in the ‘white space’ to make it look less sterile. You don’t need a jungle, one or two plants are sufficient.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 184px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaZfDspoII/AAAAAAAAA3c/4vt7eJ8g_vw/s200/creative%2Benvironment%2Bpiece%2Bof%2Bart.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541285150373552258" />We also placed a piece of art to make the environment look less sterile. It is often said that art promotes creative behavior; however, the effect of art isn’t that clear cut. It depends heavily of the person (reference follows). A good piece of art has the power to evoke certain emotions. However, it depends on the person which emotions it evokes. In the case of this one man office, it depends of only one person (this in contrary to rooms which are used by many people). If he likes it, it can foster his creativity. Moreover, a self chosen piece of art can be beneficial to the identification of the user with the environment, which, on its turn, contributes to the feeling of privacy. So in this case, a piece of art could promote Gijs’ creativity.

colors of the bookcase

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 157px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaZ1iSpwII/AAAAAAAAA3k/JveFkEHkQCM/s200/creative%2Benvironment%2Bbookcase.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541285536543129730" />The bookcase is – often – a big and therefore visually important part of a room. Therefore you will easily find your books again).

a heavenly ceiling

It has been proven that the color of blue facilitates creative behavior (Mehta & Zhu, 2009). Blue also promotes relaxation. Probably both effects have the same underlying cause; an association with the blue sky which allows for some restoration. Then the question arise, where to put the blue color? When you paint the wall behind the user, he will not see it. Painting the wall in front or at the left side of him isn’t an option either because this would contrast too much with the white board or piece of art. At this point, I started considering painting the ceiling.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TOaaNCvmSQI/AAAAAAAAA3s/QzMnepNNmOo/s200/creative%2Benvironment%2Bceiling.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541285940391463170" />The advantages of painting the ceiling are that the color is always within the visual field and the blue ceiling is associated with a blue sky. The risk of painting a ceiling is that it visually lowers the ceiling, even though a high ceiling promotes creativity (Meyers-Levy & Zhu, 2007). We successfully solved this problem by picking a slight blue tint. Moreover, to promote the height of the ceiling, the distance between the lamp and the ceiling was increased. You can see result of our little experiment on the pictures. But, if you really want to experience the blue ceiling, go and visit Gijs. You’ll see the blue ceiling. And you won’t. An interesting effect.

Gijs is happy with his office. Therefore I’m happy. However, the best compliment I can get is that the office does as I tried to design it: fostering creativity of its users. An experiment with Gijs and his office would supply us with only one participant, which is way too few participants to draw any valid conclusions. Therefore, we have to focus on his opinion. It’s not considered scientifically, but interesting it sure is.

shifting walls offer you extra rooms

Love to have some more rooms, but you don't have the extra floor space? That's what they did in Førde, Norway. In the storhagen atrium (a large governmental building) Ralston & Bau introduced colorful lines know from subway systems and combined them with graphical shapes to guide users in the environment and thereby avoid users from getting lost.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 222px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TNwVzrDS1AI/AAAAAAAAA0w/0MmOwmm2pl0/s400/color%2Bsignage%2Bin%2Benvironment%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538325619232920578" />

'Finally' interior designers start to get the point; the design should make use of the human sensory system. By just adding simplicity (in terms of colors and shapes) to their design, they created an intuitive signage system and offered a solution to impossible route descriptions like: "first left, than the second right, walk down the hall and there you find the elevator. Take the elevator to the third flour and then it's the fifth door on you right."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TNwVz9Y393I/AAAAAAAAA04/dn-R1gDif7U/s400/color%2Bsignage%2Bin%2Benvironment%2B3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538325624155273074" />

If you are living in Enschede, the Netherlands, you can find such a solution in the Bastille building at Twente University. Before the lines were introduced, the building was a labyrinth for people who never visited the building before. Now, the receptionist just has to refer to a colored line and people will find their destination easily.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TNwV0L93tBI/AAAAAAAAA1A/k8JfvH2jcyY/s400/color%2Bsignage%2Bin%2Benvironment%2B4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538325628068541458" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TNwV0aYJGcI/AAAAAAAAA1I/j-f4O-W-YbA/s400/color%2Bsignage%2Bin%2Benvironment%2B5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538325631936829890" />

Dani & Joost, bedankt!

NS - broken toilet theory

<img style="float:right; margin:10px 10px 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 168px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZpvGstzigk/TF-5TpEHCPI/AAAAAAAAAs0/1ONDmIhkx9o/s200/toilet.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503321016761780466" />Ooit last gehad van bekladde of bekraste treintoiletten?

Keep you posted!

Helaas pindakaas.

Via the invisible gorilla

Alter & Oppenheimer (2006), predicting short-term stock fluctuations by using processing fluency, PNAS 103, 24, 9369 - 9372, DOI: 10.1073/pnas.0601071103

Stock exchange picture by Perpetualtourist2000, used under CC-licence
